In Trinidad and Tobago’s rich musical culture, the rhythm section is known as the ‘engine room.’ It is a group of percussionists that accompanies steelbands and is its heartbeat. Historically, this music was banned during colonial rule; playing, dancing and participation became an act of resistance, celebration, and catharsis. This contemporary reflection on the traditional sounds of the rhythm section was commissioned for the Brooklyn Arts Council’s Sonic Clinic.
